Sometimes the Internet is an amazing tool, and sometimes it just gets me upset. I got turned onto the blog Young House Love a few years ago, and I am now a faithful reader. It never ceases to amaze me what they can do all by themselves and how good it all looks. And that’s all fine and dandy until I walk in my own front door.
As a general disclaimer I have to say that I do not own my own home, so I’m somewhat (translation: incredibly) limited in what I can do with any given space. When I look at the likes of the YHL blog and then look around at my own living room, kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom I get pretty depressed and envious.
On my summer to-do list I’ve had the big task of painting all of our bedroom furniture so that it matches. For a long time all the pieces have had a crappy coat of white paint which I did in a hurry and looked terrible. I decided to go darker and paint everything a rich brown, painting and finishing it properly. I spent all day yesterday working on this project, and by all day I mean all day. My whole body aches today from the work. I thought this would be a good move. I expected it to look amazing and tie everything together better. Our bedroom is probably the most neglected room in the house in terms of decorating, so I was prepared for this to be a big moment.
Well, I pretty much hate it. Painting the furniture was like throwing a pebble into the ocean. This room still looks awful and I just don’t know what to do.
Here’s the bedroom from Young House Love which I openly lust over *cue angelic chorus*

And actually that’s an old picture. They just did more to it a few days ago which makes it look even more amazing. But whatevs.
The appropriate thing to do next would be to post a photo of my bedroom, but I’ll save you the nausea.
I wish there were a home improvement blog with amazing ideas for renters. You know, those of us who can’t change wall color, carpet, flooring, tiling…basically everything. Maybe reading it every day would give me higher self-esteem.
There is, isn’t there? Apartment Therapy or something? You should check it out.

It’s probably a shame that I do own my house and still have done nothing since my initial change-everything-phase when I first moved in. I mean, there is still ridiculous seafoam green paint in the hallway with an obnoxious 70′s Miami border. I really need to get with it. My living room needs a lot of love too. So does my bedroom… Really I just need to get rich and hire someone to fix it because I’m just too tired.
Good for you for painting your furniture though! That’s a huge task.
Don’t worry. Next time I visit, I’ll just do it all. It sounds like fun to me!
